A new report from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/about\/press-room\/deloitte-announces-holiday-travel-intent-results.html\"><strong>Deloitte<\/strong><\/a> says <strong>54%<\/strong> of Americans surveyed plan to travel between Thanksgiving and mid\u2011January. That sounds like a strong travel season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More Travelers, But Smaller Budgets<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the catch: the same Deloitte survey says the <strong>average travel budget is $2,334<\/strong>, and that\u2019s <strong>18% lower<\/strong> than last year. Deloitte also says travelers plan fewer trips: <strong>1.83 trips<\/strong> this season compared with <strong>2.14<\/strong> in 2024. In other words, the travel \u201cyes\u201d is rising, but the spending \u201cyes\u201d is getting weaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Budgets Feel Tight<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Deloitte found that <strong>31%<\/strong> of people surveyed said they feel <strong>worse off financially<\/strong> than a year ago (up from 2024). When people feel uncertain, they usually cut costs first\u2014especially on things like hotels, upgrades, and restaurants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Even High-Income Travelers Are Pulling Back<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where the <strong>holiday travel spending turbulence<\/strong> gets more interesting. Deloitte notes that some higher\u2011income travelers (people earning $100,000+ a year) plan to reduce trips and trim costs. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/fewer-trips-tighter-wallets-holiday-travel-demand-cools-across-board-report-2025-11-12\/\"><strong>Reuters<\/strong><\/a> report on the survey highlights that even higher\u2011income households reported feeling financially worse off, and many are choosing more cost\u2011effective options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Travel Companies Still See Big Crowds<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if budgets are tighter, travel can still be busy. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.aaa.com\/2025\/11\/aaa-thanksgiving-travel-forecast-2025\/\"><strong>AAA<\/strong><\/a> projected <strong>81.8 million<\/strong> Americans would travel at least 50 miles for Thanksgiving in late November\u2014an all\u2011time record. So we may see crowded roads and airports, even while people try to spend less once they arrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Simple Takeaway<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you work in travel, hospitality, retail, or service, this <strong>holiday travel spending turbulence<\/strong> matters. You may see strong demand, but customers might be more price\u2011sensitive.
