The phrase <strong>Korea exports surge<\/strong> fits this story well because the country\u2019s overseas sales jumped sharply right at the beginning of the month. In the <strong>first 10 days of the month<\/strong>, the country\u2019s exports reached <strong>$21.5 billion<\/strong>, which was <strong>55.6% higher<\/strong> than the same period last year <strong>(<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.yna.co.kr\/view\/AEN20260311002551320\"><strong>Yonhap News<\/strong><\/a><strong>)<\/strong>. That was the <strong>highest export total ever recorded<\/strong> for the first 10 days of a month. At the same time, imports rose <strong>21.7%<\/strong> to <strong>$19.4 billion<\/strong>, leaving the country with a <strong>$2.1 billion trade surplus<\/strong> <strong>(<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/koreajoongangdaily.joins.com\/news\/2026-03-11\/business\/economy\/Exports-surge-by-556-during-first-10-days-of-March-on-robust-chip-demand\/2542032\"><strong>Korea JoongAng Daily<\/strong><\/a><strong>)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chips Are Leading the Way<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The biggest reason for the jump was semiconductors. Chip exports surged <strong>175.9%<\/strong> to <strong>$7.6 billion<\/strong>, another record for the first 10 days of a month <strong>(<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.yna.co.kr\/view\/AEN20260311002551320\"><strong>Yonhap News<\/strong><\/a><strong>)<\/strong>. That means chips made up <strong>35.3% of all exports<\/strong> during that period. In simple terms, more than one out of every three export dollars came from semiconductors. Strong global demand for AI-related technology has helped push Korean chip sales much higher <strong>(<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/koreajoongangdaily.joins.com\/news\/2026-03-11\/business\/economy\/Exports-surge-by-556-during-first-10-days-of-March-on-robust-chip-demand\/2542032\"><strong>Korea JoongAng Daily<\/strong><\/a><strong>)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not Every Industry Is Growing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, the story is not all sunshine and gold bars. Some products did very well, while others moved in the opposite direction. <strong>Petroleum products<\/strong> rose <strong>44.1%<\/strong> to <strong>$1.4 billion<\/strong>, which added more strength to the overall numbers. But <strong>automobile exports<\/strong> actually fell <strong>13.9%<\/strong> to <strong>$1.4 billion<\/strong>, and <strong>ship exports<\/strong> dropped <strong>61.9%<\/strong> to <strong>$465 million<\/strong> <strong>(<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.yna.co.kr\/view\/AEN20260311002551320\"><strong>Yonhap News<\/strong><\/a><strong>)<\/strong>. So while semiconductors are carrying a lot of weight right now, not every part of the export economy is enjoying the same ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">China and the U.S. Bought Much More<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking at destinations, Korea saw especially strong demand from its two biggest major markets. Exports to <strong>China<\/strong> jumped <strong>91.2%<\/strong> to <strong>$5.1 billion<\/strong>, while shipments to the <strong>United States<\/strong> climbed <strong>69.9%<\/strong> to <strong>$4.2 billion<\/strong> <strong>(<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/koreajoongangdaily.joins.com\/news\/2026-03-11\/business\/economy\/Exports-surge-by-556-during-first-10-days-of-March-on-robust-chip-demand\/2542032\"><strong>Korea JoongAng Daily<\/strong><\/a><strong>)<\/strong>. That U.S. increase stood out even more because tariff pressure from Washington is still hanging in the background. In other words, Korean exporters are still finding ways to sell more, even when the political weather is not exactly friendly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why This Matters for the Bigger Economy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These export numbers matter because they suggest Korea\u2019s economy still has real momentum. In many ways, the latest trade data shows why people are saying <strong>Korea exports surge<\/strong> as chip demand stays strong and supports the wider economy. Earlier this month, a <strong>Reuters<\/strong> report said South Korea\u2019s factory activity expanded for a <strong>third straight month<\/strong> in February, with output rising on strong chip demand <strong>(<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/south-korea-factory-activity-expands-third-month-output-jump-pmi-shows-2026-03-03\/\"><strong>Reuters<\/strong><\/a><strong>)<\/strong>. The Bank of Korea also recently lifted its <strong>2026 growth forecast to 2.0% from 1.8%<\/strong>, pointing to the export boom in semiconductors. So this early March data is not just a random spike. It fits a bigger picture: chips are doing the heavy lifting, and they are helping support growth across the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Strong Start, but Questions Remain<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is clearly a strong start to March, and it shows how important semiconductors have become for Korea\u2019s economy. But there is still a question hanging in the air: can one sector keep carrying the whole team? If chip demand stays hot, Korea could continue to post strong export numbers in the months ahead. But if demand cools, or if trade tensions get worse, the mood could change quickly.
