According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/california-sues-23andme-over-2023-data-breach-2026-05-28\/\">Reuters<\/a>, a bankruptcy administrator said the <strong>23andMe data breach payout<\/strong> should total <strong>$46.75 million<\/strong>. The plan still needs court approval, but it could bring compensation to customers whose genetic and personal information was exposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the 23andMe Data Breach Payout Matters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>23andMe data breach payout<\/strong> matters because this was not a normal case of stolen email addresses or passwords. The breach involved genetic and personal information, which feels much more sensitive for many customers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/california-sues-23andme-over-2023-data-breach-2026-05-28\/\">Reuters reported<\/a> that the breach exposed information connected to an estimated <strong>6.9 million U.S. customers<\/strong>. The amount is also <strong>$3.25 million below<\/strong> the maximum previously authorized by the judge. Since <strong>$14.29 million<\/strong> had already been disbursed in connection with the breach, the additional payout would be about <strong>$32.46 million<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happened in the Breach?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">23andMe said the incident involved <strong>credential stuffing<\/strong>, a type of cyberattack where hackers use usernames and passwords stolen from other websites to break into accounts. In its own <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.23andme.com\/articles\/addressing-data-security-concerns\">security update<\/a>, 23andMe said attackers accessed fewer than <strong>0.1%<\/strong> of customer accounts directly, or about <strong>14,000 accounts<\/strong>. But through connected features, the attacker was able to access information from about <strong>5.5 million DNA Relatives profiles<\/strong> and about <strong>1.4 million Family Tree profiles<\/strong>. That is why a small number of direct account break-ins became a much larger privacy problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bankruptcy Makes the Case More Complicated<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This case became more complicated because 23andMe filed for bankruptcy protection in March 2025. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/dna-testing-firm-23andme-files-chapter-11-bankruptcy-sell-itself-2025-03-24\/\">Reuters reported<\/a> that the company had struggled with weak demand for ancestry testing kits and reputational damage after the 2023 breach.
