Introducing OpenAI ChatGPT Agent Rollout Autonomous Tasks: Your New AI Assistant
Unifying Power for Complex Tasks
OpenAI began rolling out its powerful new ChatGPT Agent capability for Pro, Plus, and Team users on July 17, 2025. Full deployment to these tiers should complete within days to a week. This OpenAI ChatGPT Agent rollout autonomous tasks feature unifies OpenAI’s previous Deep Research and Operator tools. Unlike traditional chatbots, ChatGPT Agent can autonomously complete entire workflows. It moves beyond just providing answers or generating content—it can conduct complex research, plan activities, analyze data, and produce deliverables like spreadsheets, presentations, and reports. It also handles administrative operations such as scheduling and email management.
Operating in a Virtual World
ChatGPT Agent operates within an isolated virtual computer environment. This setup allows it to maintain context across all tasks and tools. It actively browses websites, interacts with web interfaces by clicking, scrolling, and filling forms, and runs code. The agent also accesses APIs. It integrates a text browser and a visual web browser for comprehensive web interaction. Furthermore, it includes terminal access for code execution and connects to third-party services like Gmail, Google Drive, and GitHub via “connectors.” OpenAI’s image generation technology is also a component, allowing the agent to create visuals.
User Control and Future Implications
Staying in Charge
Users maintain significant control over the agent’s actions. ChatGPT requests permission before taking significant steps, and users can interrupt or stop tasks at any point. A side window displays all activity for real-time monitoring. According to OpenAI, ChatGPT Agent achieved 41.6% accuracy on Humanity’s Last Exam (HLE) and 68.9% on the BrowseComp benchmark, successfully completing 80% of benchmark tasks. OpenAI will deprecate the standalone Operator experience, as its core functionality has been integrated into ChatGPT Agent.
Access, Safety, and Cautions
This service is available to paid ChatGPT users. Pro users receive 400 messages monthly, while Plus and Team users get 40 messages, with options for additional credits. Pro users pay \$200/month, and Plus users pay \$20/month. Enterprise users receive full access with integrations and custom pricing. OpenAI has built-in safeguards like “Watch Mode” for warnings before sensitive actions, a sandbox to prevent file access outside the session, and logging for debugging and auditing. However, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman advised caution, stating that while the OpenAI ChatGPT Agent rollout autonomous tasks feature is a glimpse into the future, you should not yet use it for high-stakes or sensitive tasks due to ongoing challenges with reliability, privacy, and potential for hallucination.
